Atiku to snub Nigeria’s hospitals if he wins
Former vice president and PDP’s presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has refused to commit himself to the failing health sector in the country.
Atiku wants to take over from Muhammadu Buhari, who leaves office on 29 May. Buhari spent a good number of months receiving treatments at the foreign hospital.
The president has not made efforts to raise the standard of several federal hospitals and medical centers to cater for his needs. He would rather go to the hospital abroad at the expense of the country.
Mr. Atiku Abubakar has made the United Arab Emirates his own point of reckoning. He spends most of his time abroad and as a result receives his own medical care abroad.
In an exclusive interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Atiku made it clear that he would patronize the hospitals in Nigeria.
But he was careful to give a condition. He said if the hospitals do not have what he needs, he has no choice but to travel abroad for treatment or consultation.
Hundreds of trained medical doctors fly out of the country almost on a monthly basis to seek greener pastures outside Nigeria. They also want a better and more equipped hospitals to ply their trades.
Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has lamented the brain drain in the sector. Yet a presidential hopeful has refused to commit himself.
Atiku shows indifference to the health sector of the country. In fact his emergence can bring more woes to the sector that has collapsed. He competes with Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, who also travels out of Nigeria for medical attention.
The other candidate, Peter Obi, has not shown his view on Nigeria health sector. The fact is it is worrisome how the sector receives little to no attention at all.
