The APC national convention would now hold on 26 March. The exercise has been shifted on several occasions and it looked like it wouldn’t hold anymore.
Mr. Adams Oshiomhole lost his job as the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress in June, 2020. The political party has been under the stewardship of a caretaker committee.
The National Executive Council of the party decided to part ways with Mr. Oshiomhole. And the caretaker committee has Mr. Mai Mala Buni as the chairman. He led the party until Monday, 7 March.
The NEC initially gave Mai Mala Buni-led committee six months to conduct a convention. But the committee was not really interested in doing that.
The ward, local government area and state congresses were parallel in several states of the country. In the midst of the crisis, Buni fixed February for the convention. Yet it didn’t hold.
Mai Mala Buni has a responsibility in Yobe State. He needs to pay more attention to governance in the northeastern state. Rather, he is somehow glued to what happens at the APC national secretariat.
The later plan was that the convention should hold in March. Meanwhile, there were no clear-cut arrangements for the exercise. There was no zoning, no venue and other logistics.
It is true that tremendous progress has been recorded under the leadership of Mai Mala Buni. The All Progressives Congress was able to win Ondo gubernatorial election and other bye elections.
At the same time, he wooed a large number of PDP politicians into the APC. However, these are not the duties assigned to his committee.
An unverified report says that Buni intentionally delayed the convention. Another says that he plans to team up with former president Goodluck Jonathan ahead of 2023 poll.
Then, some governors of the party talked to the president to remove Mr. Buni. There was no declaration to that effect. But the Niger State governor Mr Bello had taken over.
And within the same week, the timetable for the convention has come out. Likewise, zoning arrangements are out. One can now ask that was Buni the clog for years over APC national convention?
