Court Asks Kano Govt. To Pay Ado Bayero N10m
The power tussle in Kano State has taken a new dimension. There have been issues over the throne of Emir of Kano as two cousins lay claim to the stool of the emir.
Last month, the Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, who wa deposed by Yusuf’s predecessor Umar Ganduje in 2020. He immediately gave a fresh letter of appointment to Sanusi II.
But Aminu Ado Bayero, who was reigning since 2020 was not ready to surrender the throne. He immediately approached the court, which has now ruled that the state government pay him a sum of N10m for wrongly removing him.
Nevertheless, the court was quiet about whether he should continue as the traditional leader of the ancient city of Kano or not.
Justice S. A. Amobeda, of the Federal High Court, Kano ruled that the government violated Bayero’s right. Therefore, that sum of money be paid to him.
The judge declared that the act of the Kano Governor in directing the police to “arrest the Applicant without any lawful justification is a threatened breach of the fundamental right to Liberty of the Applicant guaranteed under Section 35(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as altered)”.
