Former vice president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar can help to balance power between northern and southern region. He can be the most needed politician to bridge the imbalance between the two regions.
Nigeria’s democracy will clock 24 years in 2023. And southern region has been in the corridor of power for a period of 13 years. That means the northern region will have taken 11 years by that time.
Former president Olusegun Obasanjo was in power from 1999 to 2007 spanning eight years. He is from southern Ogun State. Former president Goodluck Jonathan led the country from 2010 to 2015.
The late former president Umar Musa Yar’adua couldn’t complete his tenure as he died untimely. He took over from Obasanjo and it was Jonathan who completed his tenure.
The incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari took the oath of office on 29 May, 2015. He will have been in power for eight years next year. And he will hand over to another person.
The argument in some quarters is that the northern region has not spent as much time as the southern region. The argument continues that the north be allowed to spend four more years in power.
Luckily enough, a very top ally of Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Raymond Dokpesi has informed Nigerians that Atiku will spend just a term of four years in the presidential villa.
Of course, Atiku is one of the oldest politicians in the country at this moment. He may not be able to stay in power for more than four years as argued by Dokpesi.
That means Atiku, who is from Adamawa State, will be in power (if he is elected) till 2027. That will surely help to balance the sharing or rotation of power between the two regions.
By 2027 Nigerian democracy will be 28 years. North will be in power for 15 years while the southern region will be in power for 13 years. And that will be a bit better and fairer.
