Why Buhari can’t choose APC presidential candidate

0

Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari may not singlehandedly choose the All Progressives Congress candidate for the 2023 presiential election. The president isn’t a strong and committed member of the party at all.

Buhari was once APC presidential candidate. And that was the last time he showed commitment to the party.

The APC presidential candidate will emerge in the APC presiential primary election. But normally Buhari can influence it.

Truly, he is the leader of the political party. And by virtue of that, he leads the party while others follow. However, his will may not stand firmly on the party and he may not be able to choose for the party.

He was recently interviewed by the Channels Television. He categorically told the country that he wouldn’t reveal his preferred candidate for fear of elimination. The truth is he can’t just determine for the party.

A check on the commitment of Buhari to the APC shows some lackluster on his part. He hardly gives his opinion on matters or issues that concern the party.

To be more specific in this regard, when the internal crisis started in Kano State chapter of the APC, it was Bola Ahmed Tinubu who deemed it fit to settle the matter amicably.

If the president prefers Bola Tinubu at the end of the day, it is really possible for his influence to come to fruition. But it should be stated that it’s not Buhari’s choice that supercedes.

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo was able to singlehandedly choose the late Umar Yar’adua as the PDP’s candidate in 2007. But Obasanjo really held the party together.

How many open campaigns of the APC had Buhari led since he became the president? Then, could he boast of staunch loyalists in each state of the federation?
