Why Igbo youths refuse to apply for police recruitment

0

Teeming Igbo youths have bluntly refused to apply for the ongoing police recruitment. The force recently started the exercise for constables.

At least eighty one thousand and five applicants have shown interest in the job to join the Nigeria Police Force. But data show reluctance of the Igbo youths towards the national exercise.

There are five states in the southeast region: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo State. But only one thousand four hundred and four representing paltry 2% are from the five states. Nigeria has six regions.

Surprisingly, Anambra State has the lowest number of applicants. One hundred and fifty eight of them showed interest in the job.

There are concrete reasons to back this negative attitudes. The first and most convincing one is the ceaseless attacks on the police stations and outfits.

The insecurity coupled with agitation for Biafra Republic has made police stations in southeast targets for the agitators.

Unknown gunmen do launch indiscriminate, but we’ll planned attacks on the security personnel in the restive region. There have been so many instance of breach of security.

Whenever the gunmen attack the stations, they burn the building and fire shots at the police officers on duty at that period of time.

This could actually warrant the attitude of the Igbo youths. They know how risky it is to be involved in the Nigeria Police Force considering what they have witnessed.

Apart from that, the Indigenous People of Biafra has almost totally succeeded in manipulating the minds of a number of youths in the region.

The group calls for release of its leader Nnamdi Kanu while also asking for a breakaway from the federation. The group has propagandas which are capable of influencing the youths decision.

It’s noted that the youths would prefer being officers in the police. To put it in much simpler term, they want to start from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police.

This can also be another reason, or factor. But it is not genuine. The ASP rank requires higher degrees including HND and Bsc. Does it mean all Igbo youths have this particular requirement?
