The 33rd AFCON is coming with intrigues. Some underdogs are seriously frustrating top contenders or favourites to win the trophy.
The game which is now in its second week has witnessed shocking results. Top favorites including Algeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Tunisia and Ghana are struggling to make headways.
Algeria, the defending champions, shocking lost to the minnows, Equatorial Guinea. The must win match for Algeria was lost by the desert foxes.
Algeria beat Senegal in the 2019 AFCON finals to lift the continental trophy. But it has not been rosy for Algeria in the competition. They were held by Sierra Leone in the first game.
As if that was not enough, Equatorial Guinea scored just one goal to push Algeria to the bottom of the Group F table with just one point.
Cote D’Ivoire could have qualified for the knockout stage yesterday. The Elephants were also held by the same Sierra Leone. In fact the late minute goal caused despair.
The Elephants had gone into the match with high motivation having beaten Equatorial Guinea in the first match. A win against Sierra Leone would have booked a place for them in the knockout stage.
Ghana had been frustrated twice now. The black stars would need to wait till the last group game before it can book a place in the knockouts.
North African Morocco recorded a victory against the Black Stars. But it would have been better if Ghana beat Gabon. The late equalizer pushed Ghana to brim of frustration.
