How IPOB makes things tougher for Nnamdi Kanu

0

The Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari has ruled out pardoning the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He said Nnamdi Kanu would face the law and there won’t be any political solution.

Kanu was arrested upon his arrival in Nigeria from Kenya. He was extradited into the country though he claimed that it was an unlawful arrest. He has since mid last year been put in custody and he only appears in court once in a while.

The IPOB has almost totally complicated the whole matter for its leader, who desperately needs his freedom at this moment. The proscribed group has not helped the issue.

Virtually all actions the group takes are detrimental to the release of Nnamdi Kanu. Of course, the federal government might have been compelled to let go the Biafra leader. But things are being complicated by the group.

The IPOB had initially used the sit-at-home orders to present its case to the whole world. Shops would be shut, schools, banks, markers would be deserted. But it seems the people now defy the orders.

The group has now called for a stop to the singing of national attention knowing full well that it’s a part of the symbol of the country. The federal government has reiterated its commitment to Nigeria’s oneness.

The release of Nnamdi Kanu might have been secured. But the unrest in the eastern region coupled with IPOB’s negative attitudes towards unity of the country have made Kanu’s case more complex.
