Why north wants Jonathan as Buhari’s successor

0

The northern elite seem to freely embrace the return to power of Mr. Goodluck Jonathan, the former president of the country. They appear to prefer him as Buhari’s successor.

There are some reasons why an average northern leader will want to see Jonathan in power again in 2023. He was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election. It was a shocking defeat.

The northern elite must have done their calculation. They know that Jonathan can spend a maximum of just one term of four years in power if he is returned as Nigerian president in 2023. And after that, power will return to north.

North wants to stay on power for as long as possible. Whereas the southern region will raise eyebrows. In order to compensate the south, Jonathan can be allowed to take over from Jonathan. And in 2027, north will resume for another eight years.

Apart from that, the north appears to know some policies of the former president. They know that he will be ready to relinquish power at any time. It won’t be difficult to make him hand over power in 2027 if he is elected again in 2023.

Despite the fact that he has military at his disposal, Mr. Jonathan willingly dropped power and allowed a smooth transition of power in 2015. The same will happen in 2027. Hence, north will want him to take over from Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Lastly, the southwest is being rocked by agitation for an unrealistic Oduduwa Republic. The issue of Mr. Sunday Igboho is still rife in Yoruba land. Likewise Mr Nnamdi Kanu and his proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra are upsetting Igbo land.

If the northern region actually wants south to take over, it must be from free and secure area. Considering the reasons above, northern elite prefer Goodluck Jonathan as a replacement.
