A former Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Olumuyiwa Jimoh had called for suspension of the immediate speaker of the house, Mudasiru Obasa. On 13 January, 2025 more than two-thirds of the 40 lawmakers decided to remove him as speaker. Honourable Mojisola Meranda was elected in his stead.
Upon his arrival into Nigeria two days ago, the speaker, who had spent more than two decades in the house, said that he was not impeached as the lawmakers didn’t follow the constitution to remove him. He boasted that none of the lawmakers are as experienced as he is.
But the former deputy speaker said that Obasa knew the implication of what he said and it is suspension from the house. Jimoh added that what Obasa is currently doing is impersonation.
“He (Obasa) claims that he is still the speaker which I think he knows that the implication is automatic suspension. I feel he should be suspended for that. It is an impersonation,” Jimoh said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, on Monday.
“How can he be the bona fide speaker of the house? It is going to lead to his suspension. he knows its implication. he has been in the house for almost two decades. If I were to be in the house, I am going to move a motion for his suspension.”
