Kano Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi III has issued a stern warning to his cousin and rival Ado Bayero after the Court of Appeal in Abuja delivered a judgement over the tussle on the stool of the emir. Both men are claiming to be the authentic king of the ancient city of Kano.
Sanusi, who was appointed in 2014 by Rabiu Kwankwaso was dethroned in 2020 by Umar Ganduje, the immediate past governor. Ganduje, who is now the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, appointed Sanusi’s cousin Ado Bayero.
In 2023, a stooge of Kwankwaso took over the government of Kano State and while dancing to the tune of his benefactor, worked on returning Sanusi from exile to the throne of the emir. Mr. Abba Yusuf sacked Bayero and reinstated Sanusi.
Not pleased with the development, Ado Bayero approached the court though he is still occupying a palace in Kano. He got an order of the Federal High Court, Kano, which lacked jurisdiction to even hear the suit. The Court of Appeal has declared that the high court lacked jurisdiction over the case.
Sanusi, who also enjoys the support of Nasir El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar among others, said that the verdict of the appellate court was expected and that Ado Bayero knew how it would end.
Sanusi said: “As you all know, the Appeal Court has confirmed today that the Federal High Court has no jurisdiction over emirate issues. This judgment was expected, and those who initiated the case in court knew this all along.
“Even the judge who issued the initial order was aware of the limits of his jurisdiction. Those who influenced him to make that decision also knew the truth.
“However, for the past eight months, their aim has been to promote selfish interests and instigate unrest in this part of the country.
“Despite their efforts, our greatest achievement is that the state has remained peaceful. There has been no violence or disorder. We call on everyone to continue maintaining peace and unity.
“This battle is not ours but God’s. And God does not need anyone’s help. Let us keep praying for His guidance and intervention. May God protect us, and whoever seeks to ignite chaos in Kano, may that fire consume them instead.
“To those who wish harm upon Kano or its peace, may they face the consequences of their own wishes.”
