The Ondo State Government has introduced a PTA levy on students in public schools owned by the state. Most of the states in Nigeria are giving free education to students although the schools are poorly or not equipped at all.
In a letter the permanent secretary, Ondo State ministry of education, science and technology, Mrs. F. A. Adegoke, the government directed principals and other authorities in the schools to begin to collect a sum of N2,700 on all the SS 3 students.
The government in the letter said that the funds would be used to procure necessary materials for the success of the students. Most of the public schools in the southwestern Nigerian state lack basic facilities including functional laboratory, libraries and the students have to sit on the broken floors.
