The Peoples Democratic Party has slammed President Bola Tinubu over the issues that surround his tax reform. The president introduced the reform, which he said is necessary for the overall interest of Nigeria. However, the bills, which are in the National Assembly, have generated argument and controversy with majority of northern leaders calling for their withdrawal though for more consultation.
In his own reaction, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed said that the bills would ultimately cripple the northern region as many states would not be able to pay salaries and construct roads. He added that the president, who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, is calling for anarchy.
The presidency has responded through Mr. Sunday Dare, one of the spokesperson for the president. He said that Bala Mohammed should rather engage in constructive criticism instead of making fiery rhetoric.
However, the PDP has thrown its weight behind the Bauchi State Governor. The party’s national chairman Umar Damagum and secretary sunay Ude-Okoye in a joint statement described the bills as “anti-people”. He added that the government has borrowed a lot with nothing to show for it.
The PDP said that it’s not afraid of any threat from anybody. The party added that the Nigerian people and their governors would stand up to any threat to them. The party failed to point at the specific issues with the bills.
The party chairman stated, “The party is solely behind his (Gov Bala Mohammed) remarks. These tax reforms are anti-people. The government cannot continue to borrow with nothing to show. This is the position of our party.”
He stated, “As an opposition party, we are not afraid of threats from anybody. The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum has expressed his views on the Tax Reform Bills, so it is left for them to look into it.
“Any issue of threat to the governors, I want to say that Nigerians and the governors are equal to the task.”
