The defeated Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has explained how he left the Middle East country as the rebels were moving closer to the capital city of Damascus.

The rebels are now in charge of the country with several other countries promising to give supports as the Syrian people celebrate “their freedom”.

al-Assad said that his departure from Syria was not planned and that Russia called for his evacuation from the military base which was under a serious attack.

“My departure from Syria was neither planned nor did it occur during the final hours of the battles,” said a statement on the ousted presidency’s Telegram channel, adding “Moscow requested… an immediate evacuation to Russia on the evening of Sunday December 8” after he moved to Latakia early that day.

Assad he was moved to Russia from the Hmeimim base in Syria on the evening of December 8 when the rebels launched a barrage of drones.

“When the state falls into the hands of terrorism and the ability to make a meaningful contribution is lost, any position becomes void of purpose,” the statement added.

“This does not, in any way, diminish my profound sense of belonging to Syria and her people – a bond that remains unshaken by any position or circumstance. It is a belonging filled with hope that Syria will once again be free and independent,” he said.
