Benue Governor Requests N6.6bn for Local Government Elections

Benue State Government is set to spend a sum of N6.6bn to conduct the local government elections. The state governor Hyacinth Alia, a Catholic priest, has sent a supplementary budget to the Benue State Assembly for approval.

Every state of the federation is scrambling to conduct local government elections following the pronouncement of the Supreme Court which declared that the third tier of government is autonomous.

On Wednesday the lawmakers in Makurdi, the state capital received the budget titled; ‘Submission of 2024 Supplementary Budget Estimates of Six Billion, Six Hundred and Forty -Four Million, Seven Hundred and Seventy – Eight Thousand, Nine Hundred Naira (N6,644, 778, 900.00) only towards the conduct of local government elections in Fiscal Year 2024 to the Assembly.

The speaker of the house, Hyacinth Dajoh, received the request and read it on the floor of the assembly. The local government elections would hold next month.
