Tinubu’s Government to Grind an Axe with Gov. Makinde, Others Over LG Autonomy

The administration of President Bola Tinubu is set to grind an axe with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other governors who have refused to let the local government breathe. The governors had made the local councils an appendage of their own government by appointing caretakers for the councils and sitting tightly on the funds meant for re development of local government areas.

Since the Supreme Court gave its judgement granting an autonomy to the local government, Governor Seyi Makinde has become paranoid, criticising the verdict and further stuffling life out of the local government.

There are other governors who are working covertly to frustrate the local councils, Online Parrot News reported.

On Tuesday, the Federal Government took another step towards tackling the subservience of the local government councils. It has set up a 10-man committee to monitor the level of compliance.

The Secretary to the Government of Federation George Akume set up the committee and he himself is going to head it. The committee members included the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, a representative of State Governors, and a representative of Local Governments.

In a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, it was stated that the FG has set up a committee for the implementation of the judgement.

He said, “The Secretary to the Government of the Federation has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to enforce the Supreme Court judgement delivered on 11th July 2024, granting financial autonomy to Local Governments in Nigeria.”

Imohiosen added that the objective of the committee is to ensure that Local Governments in the country enjoy their autonomy.

He said, “The committee’s primary goal is to ensure that Local Governments are granted full autonomy, allowing them to function effectively without interference from state governments.

“This move is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to ensure the appropriate implementation of the provisions of the Constitution, which recognises Local Governments as the third tier of government.”
