Senator’s N21m Per Month Is Meant for Running Cost, Not Salary

The upper chamber of the National Assembly has once again refuted the claim that each member of the house receives twenty-one million naira per month. There have always been issues and arguments over the exact amount of money the lawmakers receive every month.

Just two days ago, a senator from Kano State Kawu Sumaila opened the can of worm when he said that his monthly salary wa N600,000 even though the chairman of RMFAC has said that a senator takes over N1,000,000 as salary.

Kawu Sumaila said, “monthly salary is less than N1 million. After deductions, the figure comes down to a little over N600,000.”

Kawu had further explained, “Given the increase effected in the Senate, each Senator gets N21 million monthly as running cost.”

But Yemi Adaramodu, the spokesperson for the red chamber refuted the claim saying that N21m ja meant for running cost which would be returned if not spent.
He stated, “such funds are retired by relevant officers after being used for official purposes and proof of genuine expenditure.”

He added, “It’s not a personal allowance or salary of the legislator,” and noted that these funds also cover expenses for constituency office staff.

*The Nigerian Senate is an Assembly of accomplished and successful professionals, administrators, and captains of industry, who are not driven by these often touted egregious pecuniary bits, but rather by their patriotic zeal in the nation’s quest to breathe life into Nigeria’s political and socio-economic dry bones.”

He reiterated, “For the umpteenth time, the Senate is compelled to respond to obsolete allegations of phantom salaries and personal emoluments spuriously credited to Senators monthly.”

He clarified, “The funds referred to by Senator Kawu Sumaila are neither his salary nor personal allowance.”

He further explained, “These funds are allocated for the daily operation of Senators’ offices and other statutory officials. They also provide for constituency office staff, oversight functions, and community engagements.
