Police Confirm to Mistakenly Raid & Invade NLC Secretariat

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed carrying out an invasion and a raid on the secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress, an issue that rights groups and civil societies have seriously condemned. The police said that the invasion was unintentional.

Online Parrot News had reported that the police, some in plain clothes, fully armed, carried out an invasion on the NLC building in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. They searched the library and other rooms and turned everything upsidedown. In fact, the police took some books and documents away.

While reacting, the Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi said that the police was after a prime suspect and he was traced to a shop at he Central Business District, Abuja. The CBD hosts most of important government institutions including the NNPC Limited Towers, FIRS and the CBN.

Clarifying the situation, the police stated, “A prime criminal suspect in an ongoing investigation was traced to a shop within the building in the Central Business District, Abuja.”

The spokesperson said that the operation was carried out by detectives and they “inadvertently” entered the NLC building.

“The operation, which was conducted by detectives armed with the appropriate legal authorities, inadvertently led them to the NLC building.

However, the police emphasised, “This well-coordinated, lawful operation was solely aimed at apprehending the prime suspect—a foreign national implicated in numerous criminal activities across Nigeria and other African countries.”

*The Nigeria Police Force stressed that the operation had no connection with the NLC, its Secretariat, staff, or leadership. “The NLC Secretariat was not the focus of the operation, which was targeted at a rented shop within the building used by the suspect as a front for his criminal activities in Nigeria,” the statement added.

“We also urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and to conduct security profiling of individuals seeking to rent space within their premises,” the statement concluded.
