Russian Flag in Kano: What Sowore Has Failed to Understand

Omoyele Sowore isn’t a green horn when it comes to protest in Nigeria. He’s always been at the forefront whenever a protest is ongoing. He has called for revolution and an end to bad governance. His doggedness is almost second to none. Nevertheless, his comment on the Russian flag being flown or hoisted by protesters in Kano shows that he too could shy away from the truth at time.

Some protesters were seen brazenly flying and wielding the flag with boldness while chanting anti-Tinubu songs. The Department of State Services has arrested a Kano Tailor suspected of sewing flag, probably ignorantly.

In his comment, Sowore said that it’s not a new thing as Nigerians often use several flags in their institutions, churches and mosques. He is saying home truth here. However, the context of flying the Russian flag is really worrisome, to say the very least. Considering the activities of Moscow in West Africa in the most recent time, one would understand that the flag in Kano is concerning and no Nigerian, who values democratic principle, should make any attempt to justify it.

Russia has a hand in most of the coups in Africa. It sponsors or influences the dictators in Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger Republic. Just yesterday, Online Parrot News reported that another imperialist, the United States, withdrew all its forces from Niger Republic. Russia has already filled the vacuum.

Is Omoyele Sowore oblivious of the fact that Niger Republic shares a long border with Nigeria? Then, whatever sign of Russia in Nigeria should be critically examined.

And the protesters were also chanting anti-Tinubu songs. There’s a correlation between the flag and the songs. They wanted Vladimir Putin’s Russia to intervene and do what it does in other African countries. Trivializing the matter is a disservice to the nation in search of good governance.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains the president of the country even though he’s performing regrettably poorly. He has made several decisions that are inimical to the wellbeing of the people of the country. However, it’s unpatriotic to call for military to take over or to downplay any obvious threat to the 25-year democracy of Nigeria.
