Why Nigerians Shouldn’t Sympathize with Dangote over His Refinery
The President of Dangote Industries, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has done one of the most unusual: he came out to talk without restraint against the government and its agencies notably the NNPC Limited, the government’s company in charge of oil and gas.
Aliko Dangote, the wealthiest person in Africa, might mean well for Nigerians when he decided to build a refinery to change the crude oil to finished products including petroleum. But his dream is close to being dashed now with the unresolved differences he has with the NNPC Limited and regulatory bodies.
The president said that he had not received any incentive for the project from the Federal Government and that he paid a sum of $100m for the land at the Lekki Area of Lagos State. Neither the federal nor Lagos State government has reacted to this.
But Nigerians have accepted the narratives of the capitalist and seriously sympathized with him. An average Nigerian forgets things, issues and pains rather too quick. They don’t seem to remember things and it’s possible collective amnesia needs be treated for everyone.
For eight years of Muhammadu Buhari, the immediate past president, the capitalist had so much opportunity, so much waiver, so much monopoly that he was literally controlling the economy of the country. He bought the United States Dollar (USD) at the lowest rate giving him an edge over other competitors in the market.
However, when the table turns, the business man started his rhetoric condemning the same system that made him, lamenting that some friends were already making jest of him. Definitely, spending a fortune, $20bn on a project and it’s in limbo can be annoying, upsetting and frustrating, Nigerians should just know that it’s a battle among their tormentors. Therefore, they don’t have to sympathize with anyone.
