The Amnesty International has warned the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu against using force on Nigerians who are protesting against hardship and hunger.

Isa Sanusi, the director of Amnesty International in Nigeria issued a statement on Thursday, the first day of the protest.

“The Nigerian authorities must ensure that security agencies respect and facilitate the right to peaceful protest, as guaranteed by both the country’s constitution and human rights treaties,” Sanusi said.

The director said that the federal government through its security agencies including the police and Nigerian Army must not crack down on the people

“People must be allowed to freely exercise their rights to peaceful protests”

He added “Authorities must show commitment to uphold the country’s constitutional and international human rights obligations by allowing people to freely exercise their human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.”
