Wike-Fubara Feud: Tinubu should Intervene Again

Won’t Tinubu Intervene in Wike-Fubara Feud Again? (EDITORIAL)

The feud between Nyesom Wike, the immediate past Rivers State Governor, and his successor, Simi Fubara may slide into anarchy unless it’s immediately nipped in the bud. It’s got to a level that the president, Bola Tinubu can’t afford to stand aloof and watch things going out of hands.

He has made some efforts in the past to let the two sides sheathe their swords and reconcile them. They have however appeared irreconcilable. They had even gone to the level that happenings in the state are concerning to all Nigerians.

Just today, the youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo commented on the Wike-Fubara matter calling on the president to act and wade into the matter. Specifically, the group said, “Therefore, the Igbo youths call on Mr President to wade in to this brouhaha in bid to deescalate this tension.”

It has got to the extent of detonating dynamites in the state. Political ruffians, louts wield weapons openly without any restraint. The state is sliding into lawlessness yet the incumbent governor keeps claiming he’s on top of the situation and that there is peace and tranquility in the state.

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has mischievously called for a state of emergency. The president has constitutional power to make such declaration. But it is not immediately in the interest of the people of the state, who actually deserve more than they are getting just like other Nigerians.

Simi Fubara keeps cracking down on his “benefactor”, who is silent, but covertly emboldening his loyalists to resist the governor’s excesses. The issue of local government councils led to some killing. The matter is yet to even be resolved. The governor has appointed caretaker committees to spearhead the 23 local government areas of the state. However, they can’t fully operate because of the threat from the Wike’s camp.

Online Parrot News frowns at the siege on the local government autonomy. The agency, in totality, backs the (financial) autonomy of the councils. Hence, it will never support appointment of caretaker committees or substandard, unacceptable elections into the councils.

The president needs to speedily act and save the state, and by extension Nigeria, from the impending danger to be caused by Wike-Fubara feud. Medical experts know how dangerous waterborne diseases are. Rivers is also sitting on a gunpowder keg and its explosion would be felt in far north.

For the interest of the country, President Bola Tinubu should re-invite the feuding sides and let them know that he won’t tolerate lawlessness under any guise. The earlier he acts, the better for all.
