Tinubu Snub Northwest Governors & Their Meeting
President Bola Tinubu doesn’t need to be told the importance of northwest geopolitical zone in the election permutations. The zone is so important and strategic that every ambitious politician looks forward to its support. But the meeting of the 7 governors was not that crucial for the president to attend. He was invited.
The zone comprises Jigawa Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara. Both Kano and Kaduna determine who wins the presidential election in most of the time. Then, they should be a target of Tinubu unless he doesn’t have interest in ruling the country beyond 2027.
He sent his vice, Kashim Shettima to attend the meeting on his behalf and the vice president talked at length on what the government has achieved in he area of security. Northwest is one of the most volatile regions in the country. It still grapples with banditry and kidnapping.
Shettima said, “Our military forces, through various operations such as Operation Hadin Kai and Operation Safe Haven, have made true their promise to the nation by targeting like Boko Haram and bandits who have held for too long.
“Through enhanced border security and intelligence capabilities, we have disrupted and dismantled criminal networks. Each of you here is aware of the high-profile figureheads of these groups neutralised by our forces, and I am here to share with you that this is just the beginning.”
President Bola Tinubu must have missed a golden chance to talk directly to the core north. It’s an avenue for him to talk directly to the leaders and let them know what he has been able to achieve within one year of his administration.
Top dignitaries including former president Muhammadu Buhari, embattled Sultan of Sokoto Sa’ad Abubakar were in attendance as well as some Tinubu’s appointees. Surprisingly, there was no notable southern elite in the meeting. That’s where Tinubu got it wrong.
Meanwhile, there have been allegations against President Bola Tinubu that he has persistently snubbed the north in term of appointments. Key posts are occupied by people from southern region, notably from the southwest geopolitical zone, where Tinubu himself hails from.
Could it mean he had no spectacular thing to tell the northern people and their leaders? He should have been proud of his “achievements” if there were any. The meeting could be so crucial to let him spell out what he has been ale to do differently.
