Apex Court Reserves Judgement Over Local Government Autonomy

The apex court has reserved judgement in a suit brought by the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the local government areas enjoy their full autonomy.

The federal government through the office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, brought the lawsuit against the 36 Governors of the federation.

They have made the local governments their appendage and halt the federal allocation from reaching the coffers of the local authority directly. Apart from that, the state governors do not allow the local government to generate funds from the markets, parks, etc.

The seven-man panel led by Justice Garba Lawal has reserved judgement in the matter. And it will verdict will be delivered in the next adjournment day, which the court would announce to the parties involved.
