Tinubu’s Government Is Confused About Admitting Paying Subsidy

It’s crystal clear that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is confused about the payment of subsidy. There have been several top political leaders saying with certainty that the current administration is still paying subsidy on petroleum.

On 29 May, the newly inaugurated president told the people that he had removed subsidy on petroleum. Commentators say that subsidy is the only thing that goes round in the country. He told everyone that his government would not pay a dime to help lower PMS.

The pump price sporadically jumped to N640 and it has been there for the past one year even though dollar keeps rising against the Nigerian currency, naira. Dollar determines lots of things in the country. One should be inquisitive about the stability in the pump price while naira weakens more.

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past Kaduna State governor and PDP’s presidential candidate in 2023 general elections, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku have said that the presidency is still paying for subsidy.

Yesterday, Mr. Wale Edun, the minister of finance and economy opened up and said that the country is still paying subsidy. He said the obvious and nothing new. It’s a fact that the Federal Government under Tinubu is paying to stabilize the market for the people and to save the face of his government.

However, in a twist of events, the special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Bayo Onanuga released a State House statement on Thursday denying the rumour that the government is going to pay a whooping N5.4trillion for subsidy this year alone.

Mr. Onanuga said that the leaked documents on fiscal policy proposal are not yet official. The implications are: the documents are valid and the government is paying for subsidy. There couldn’t be more explanations for that.

Why is the administration confused then? What will it take the president, who was brave enough to announce the end of the programme, to come out again to tell Nigerians about its resumption? There wouldn’t be any big deal about it.
