Enugu People Obey IPOB, Snubs Governor Mbah

Residents and citizens of Enugu State have obeyed the order of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to stay at home to mark the remembrance day of the heroes of the only Nigerian civil war (1967 – 1970).

Online Parrot News had reported that the publicity secretary of IPOB Emma Powerful had told the people in the eastern part of the country to stay at home, close their shops and schools in remembrance of their fallen heroes.

Nigeria was plunged into war in 1967 when the then Eastern military Governor Odumegwu Ojukwu declared independence for the Igbo people.

But Enugu State Government has said that the order would not hold and that businesses would open as usual. It released a circular which said that 30 May is not a public holiday. It asked the state workers to be at their duty posts unfailingly..

The government in a circular entitled “Clarification on Attendance to Duty on Thursday 30th May, 2024,” signed by the Head of Service, Mr. Ken Ugwu, said: “It has become expedient to clarify that the State Government has not declared Thursday, 30th May, 2024 as a public holiday or sit-at-home day contrary to misconceptions from some quarters.

“May I, therefore, remind our workers that failure to be in their duty posts on the above date will attract summary dismissal from Service in line with the enabling provisions of the Public Service Rules.

“It must be noted that such purported public holiday/sit-at-home will have far-reaching consequences on the academic pursuit of our children, who are taking part in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations holding simultaneously across the nation, including the South Eastern region.

“Enugu State Government strongly frowns at any calculated attempt to mortgage the future of our children and has, therefore, put in place necessary security arrangements to guarantee the safety and unrestricted movement of all citizens and residents within the State.”

Streets, banks, shops, parks are shuttered in Enugu on Thursday as IPOB fighters along with the Eastern Security Network militants are patrolling to ensure that the people obey the order and honour the heroes.
