Rising Cost of Petroleum Amidst Scarcity

To lots of Nigerians out there, rising cost of fuel isn’t a problem in as much as the commodity is available. All they want is uninterrupted supply of the very essential goods that drives the economy of the country.

However, Nigeria has never recorded seamless supply of petroleum for six months. There would surely be issues either a hike in the pump price or unavailability of the essential goods. This time around, petrol is both costlier and scarcer.

Online Parrot News got feedbacks from people to know how much petrol costs in their areas. Our correspondents also visited a number of filling stations in Lagos, Abuja and Ibadan to see the situations.

There are very long queues at the filling stations that have fuel and the cost varies from N850 to as high as N1,000 from N640. It is worrisome that Nigerian consumers have to pay that high for a commodity whose raw material is in abundance in the country. It’s more concerning that the commodity is not even available.

Crises around petroleum have compounded since the president, Bola Tinubu decided to remove subsidy on petroleum. The programme enabled Nigerians to buy fuel at affordable cost.

The president said that though the price would go up, he assured Nigerians that it would still come down and things would ease up for the people of the country. Otherwise has been the case so far.

Our correspondents interviewed some motorists at the filling stations. One, who gave his name as Dayo, lamented that things have never been easy for the people of the country.

He said, “It annoys that we have to queue for hours to get fuel at very exorbitant prices. The president can’t just fold his arms and watch while things go south”.

On Friday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) released a statement on the current issues around petroleum. The company said that the unavailability was “due to logistics which have been resolved”.

The so-called resolution of the logistic issues is yet to manifest in the Nigerian street. The people are still groaning in pains as their problems have been compounded.
