EFCC Is Mishandling Yahaya Bello’s Case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is seriously mishandling the cases involving an ex governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello. The commission has had enough reasons and evidence to successfully prosecute him. However, the agency has not used the appropriate ways and this gives Bello an edge over the Commission.

The American International School Abuja said that it has returned the money in dollar that the former governor paid in advance for his children. The admittance of the school is enough. But what has the commission done? It opened its palms to receive the money without a court’s order which could have Ben used to indict and get a guilty verdict against Yahaya Bello.

EFCC has got one participate success in this case. It has been able to bring Bello to the public and socal media court. There have been lots of deliberation on the matter on the radio, television and social media platforms. Analysts and commentators have condemned, cursed and mocked the former governor. What has happened after that?

In his smartness, Bello went to court to seek an order to restrain the EFCC from arresting or prosecuting him. He won. The court, which is as corrupt as the political system of the country, granted the prayer. That’s Bello’s first successful step to tame the EFCC.

The Ola Olukoyede’s Commission earlier filed an appeal against the restraining order. Surprisingly, the Commission withdrew its appeal. What’s the next thing to see? The former governor released a public statement to criticize and condemn the anti-corruption agency.

Ohiare Michael, his media aide, signed the statement which said Yahaya Bello set the records straight. He accused the EFCC of blackmailing and said that he wouldn’t visit the Jabi Abuja’s headquarters of the commission. Is that comical?

The EFCC has failed to play the game smartly, hence, Yahaya Bello is cashing in on it. Isn’t it surprising that despite the evidence even in public, Bello could still talk down on the Commission?

In the statement, Bello reminded Ola that the EFCC Chairman is a lawyer and he should know that once a matter is in Court, the other parties should stay away from the media to avoid prejudice. It’s got to that level and in all honesty, Bello was right that there shouldn’t be media trial.

All the press conferences, media brouhaha, commentaries, and statement releases should come after the commission has got conviction. Ola Olukoyede and his Commission are pulling the cart before the horse.

Online Parrot News reported that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and Inspector General of Police as well as the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) have been involved in the saga. What have they done? Mere instructions or circulars with no effects. Is Bello that elusive? https://www.facebook.com/share/p/oTVhLLVeKMZtXnCW/?mibextid=oFDknk

Yahaya Bello’s matter could have been one of the biggest victories of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC. However, the approach of the commission has unfortunately defeated the objective.
