Oyo State Sets To Conduct LGA Election
The Oyo State Government is set to conduct local government elections. The exercise is rare in the country where governors have refused to allow the local government operate autonomously.
The Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, however, has proved to be different from his colleagues. It should be stated that there are few other governors who regularly conduct elections for the local government areas.
What makes that of Oyo unique is that virtually all major political parties are going to participate in the exercise. It’s a norm for the opposition parties to withdraw from local government elections with a misgiving that the ruling party would rig the polls.
But the All Progressives Congress and the Labour Party have presented candidates for the chairmanship and councillorship elections across the 33 local government areas and their wards.
On Thursday, the state governor approved the declaration of Friday, 26 April as half working day ahead of the local government polls. The governor urged all public and civil servants to troop out and vote for the candidates of their choice.
The election holds tomorrow, April 27.
