Why Can’t IGP Egbetokun Order His Men To Arrest Yahaya Bello?
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun ought to have ordered his men to immediately arrest the embattled former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello. The former governor is still on the run as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is searching for him.
Yesterday the commission took a drastic step by declaring the former governor wanted. The EFCC besieged his home on Wednesday as it attempted to bring him to book.
As a matter of fact, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has put Bello on the watch list as well. However, the matter ought not to reach this level if the Inspector General of Police performs his roles and orders his men to arrest Yahaya Bello.
On Friday, the IGP ordered that all officers attached to Bello be withdrawn immediately. That’s not actually the best decision to make. It’s amazing that while the EFCC (a department in the police force) is looking for the former governor, some police officers are protecting him.
It exposes the lack of synergy among the departments, agencies and officials of the government. The IGP should have ordered the same officers protecting Bello to arrest him and bring the former governor to the headquarters of the EFCC.
