Tinubu’s Government Spends N500m on New Minimum Wage Committee

Amidst bad economy, the administration of President Bola Tinubu has spent a sum of five hundred million naira on the committee saddled with the responsibility of reviewing and renewing the minimum wage for the Nigerian workers.

The president set up the tripartite committee to work on the minimum wage, which the Nigerian Labour Congress has been calling for after the rather shocking removal of the fuel subsidy.

The Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF) wrote a memo to the president seeking a release of one billion naira (N1,000,000) for the committee. As contained in the memo, the SGF initially proposed one billion and eight hundred million naira for the committee.

However, the proposal was scaled down to N1bn. In the memo, Mr. George Akume, the SGF, said that the new minimum wage would take off in April, 2024 as required by the law.

While acknowledging and signing the paper, President Bola Tinubu asked the SGF to start the work with 50% of the proposal.

This is coming at a time millions of Nigerians are seriously wallowing in abject poverty and thousands of businesses are falling.
