Corruption: Tinubu is doing better than Buhari

Corruption has seriously impeded development of the country. The most serious obstacle that stops ab average Nigerian from enjoying the benefits of being a citizen of the country is corruption. It’s so endemic that it has eaten deep into the basic fabrics of all sectors of the country.

Muhammadu Buhari came to power in 2015 with a popular slogan of fighting corruption. He put his main agenda to fight the menace of corruption. However, he failed to achieve the goals. While he was in power, his appointees including aides, ministers, executive secretaries at departments and agencies stole the common wealth of the people.

He himself has claimed that he didn’t know much of things that happened in his government. That’s a poor defence, anyway. However, when he left power and his successor Bola Tinubu came on board, the lid was removed from the cankerworms.

Buhari didn’t remove any of his ministers due to corruption. Mrs. Kemi Adeosun left the ministry of finance solely because of the NYSC Certificate Scandal. And she didn’t receive any suspension notice or letter. She resigned and moved on.

Even though Bola Tinubu didn’t beat his chest that he would fight corruption and corrupt practices, he has taken the bull by its horns and stamped his feet on the ground that he would never tolerate corruption.

Within six months of his administration, he has suspended a top member of his cabinet. Mrs Betta Edu has become the scapegoat and a reference point to the determination of President Bola Tinubu to fight corruption tooth and nail.

The minister instructed the accountant general of the federation to pay half a billion naira into a private account for execution of a project. She denied wrongdoings, but the president suspended her. He has also summoned the interior minister Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, whose company has been implicated in the scandal in the humanitarian affairs ministry.

Buhari didn’t show the determination, firmness and readiness to start the fight from within his cabinet. Little wonder, Bola Tinubu is now cleaning the Aegean table. It’s been messed up and the people of the country feel the pain and bear the brunt.

Sadiya Faruq, a former minister and key player in Buhari’s government as well as the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Godwin Emefiele, is facing the law over financial misconducts.

Tinubu is silently battling the scourge without brouhaha.
