Why would Tinubu ask deputy governor to resign?

After the meeting with the president, the stakeholders in Ondo State agreed to work together and maintain the status quo: the ailing Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu would continue to lead the state from Ibadan while his deputy Lucky Aiyedatiwa remains loyal to him.

The meeting had in attendance the speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, principal officers and other members of the house, APC chieftains and family members of Rotimi Akeredolu. They took pictures after which the spokesperson for the president, Mr. Ajuri Ngalele released a statement.

But few moments after the meeting, several reports started flying. There was even confusion in the state as some media reports say that the House of Assembly would declare the deputy as the acting governor of the state. Another report said that the stakeholders would obey the instructions of the president.

Nothing happened on Monday and Tuesday even though there were speculations that the lawmakers would take a decisive step on Tuesday. However, on Wednesday morning, the lawmakers asked the deputy governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to tender his letter of resignation.

The speaker of the House of Assembly Hon Olamide Oladiji, has read the resolution of the meeting with Bola Tinubu to the other lawmakers. He said that all parties in the matter need to obey the contents of the resolution (of the the meeting with Tinubu).

Oladiji said, “For the avoidance of doubt, let me present to the good people of Ondo State, the resolutions reached after the meeting of representatives of the Ondo State House of Assembly, the State Executive Council members, members of the National Assembly from Ondo State and the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress with His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the leadership of our great part, that all parties shall embrace peace, that status quo be maintained by all parties, that all impeachment proceedings be terminated forthwith, and all court cases withdrawn by all parties.

That there will be no dissolution of the State Executive Council, that an undated letter of resignation must be written and signed by the deputy governor and submitted to the President, that the party leadership and structures remained intact, that the House of Assembly leadership remained intact and that Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa continues to perform the functions of office as deputy governor.”

“We, as elected representatives of the people, have only acted within the precinct of the mandate freely given to us by our constituents. We have demonstrated courage when the occasion demanded it. We asked questions when there was cause for us, to do,” the Speaker stated.
