Jonathan arrives in Liberia after Weah conceded defeat to Boakai
Ex President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has arrived at Monrovia, capital city of Liberia. He arrived in the West African country as transition process starts between outgoing president George Weah and opposition candidate Joseph Boakai.
The septuagenarian Boakai beat Weah in the keenly contested presidential election by having 50.89 percent of the votes while the former football star Weah settled for 49.11 percent.
Weah has conceded defeat and congratulated the winner. Jonathan also accepted defeat in 2015 when the candidate of the All Progressives Congress Muhammadu Buhari beat him in the election.
African leaders often refuse to relinquish political power. They regularly hold tight fo power and conduct elections full of irregularities and malpractices. Hence, military coup is still common in the continent.
The former president played an active role in the presidential election by leading a team of African delegates to observe the election. His team commended the high level of transparency and fairness.
Jonathan wrote on his verified X handle, “In continuation of the West African Elders Forum ( #TheWAEF ) Election Mediation Mission to Liberia’s last general elections, I returned to Monrovia today to meet with His Excellency President George Weah and the President-Elect His Excellency Joseph Boakai, as they begin processes for a peaceful power transition.
“My consultations with both of them was quite reassuring. I am pleased with their sense of co-operation, purpose and patriotism as well as their determination to rally all Liberians to work for the unity, peace and progress of the country.
“I believe all of West Africa has something to learn from Liberian’s elections, especially with President Weah’s selflessness in calling to concede and congratulate the President-elect and the demonstrated commitment of all stakeholders to put the interest of the country above personal or party considerations.”
