How Court of Appeal causes confusion in Kano over governorship matter

Several thousands of residents of Kano State are still wondering how the appellate court sitting in the capital city of Kano could make clerical errors in a matter as sensitive as the governorship matter of the state.

The court had ruled that Kabir Abba Yusuf was not duly elected and affirmed the decision of the tribunal which had earlier sacked the governor. The Court of Appeal said that his appeal lacked merit.

However, in the certified true copies of the judgment, which are now in circulation the court fined the All Progressives Congress, the respondent in the matter a sum of N1,000,000 (one million naira). Whereas the same court upheld the verdict of the tribunal which said that APC candidate Yusuf Gawuna did win the gubernatorial election.

In the lead judgement delivered by Justice Moore Aseimo Abraham Adumein, the court said, “The sum of N1,000,000 is hereby awarded as cost of in favour of the appellant (Kabir Abba Yusuf) and against the 1st respondent (Yusuf Gawuna).

The New Nigeria Political Party (NNPP) has taken the matter to the Supreme Court and cited the error made by the three-man panel of the Court of Appeal as a ground. Meanwhile, people of the state are still confused as they keep asking questions about why the court would make such a serious mistake.

Kano governor Yusuf has claimed that those who want to remove him are targeting a former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is his mentor, and godfather. Both NNPP presidential candidate Kwankwaso and APC national chairman Umar Ganduje are at loggerheads.

Thousands of Supporters of the governor have taken to the streets to protest. They carried lots of placards with various inscriptions calling on federal government to stop attempts to remove Governor Yusuf.
