PDP wanes as APC wins

A critical look at the political terrain will make one wonder if truly the country is running a multi party system. The Peoples Democratic Party, which is supposed to be an alternative to the All Progressives Congress has become a shadow of itself: it wanes gradually making the APC forges ahead with the resultant bad governance.

The PDP has had good years: the Nigerian citizens entrusted their fate in the hands of the “Africa’s largest political party”. They were betrayed and they rejected the party, which said it would rule for 60 years in 2015. It stayed in power for just 16 years, one quarter of its planned tenure.

Since that 2015 till this moment, it has been from bad to worse for the political party. The APC even cashes in on its misfortunes and prospers more even though Nigerians seriously suffer from this particular situation. Lack of true leadership, internal wrangling and inability to provide a strong opposition against the government of the APC have all hitherto made the PDP play second fiddle in elections.

In the past one week, the PDP suffered from four different fronts. It came a distant third in Kogi State governorship election, behind the Social Democratic Party and winner All Progressives Congress. The party lost at the Court of Appeal in the election petition involving state governor Lawal Dauda.

The PDP also came second having got less than 100,000 of the over 600,000 votes in the Imo State gubernatorial election. Tribunal has also sacked several lawmakers elected on the platform of the party.

And in those areas where the PDP loses, the APC gains. The ruling party maintains its stance and presence in Kogi and Imo State. It’s on the verge of claiming the largest state in northern Nigeria: Kano. A Court of Appeal ruled that Yusuf Gawuna of the APC was the validly elected governor of the 44-LGA state.

As the PDP depletes, the APC grows much stronger, leaving little space for the umbrella party to thrive. Despite the fact that millions of Nigerians wallow in abject poverty, they still prefer the All Progressives Congress. The PDP couldn’t use the situation of the country to ride to power.

After the general elections, there should have been a serious deliberation to move the party forward. But otherwise is the case, hence the party performed woefully in the off-season election. If Lawal Dauda loses at the Supreme Court, there would be a rerun in three local government areas of Zamfara State. Who says the PDP will win? The party is close to losing its little presence in the northwest geopolitical zone.

So, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wanes, diminishes, reduces, the All Progressives Congress wins, gains, grows and increases.
