Is Tinubu treating Emefiele as Buhari did to Dasuki?

Will Tinubu treat Emefiele as Buhari did to Sambo Dasuki?

Shortly after the immediate past president took over from his predecessor, he started hunting his perceived political enemies. Buhari swiftly arrested the former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki, who served under Goodluck Jonathan.

The Department of State Service and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission arrested the retired colonel and dealt with him for larger part of Buhari’s administration. He was not sentenced at the end of the day. But the former NSA suffered from humiliation.

Dasuki took a role in the military coup that removed the then military head of state Muhammadu Buhari. And for 30 years Buhari nursed the grievance and acrimony. He waited patiently for his time before he took one pound of flesh on Dasuki, who served Ibrahim Babangida.

Incumbent President Bola Tinubu didn’t have to wait for several years before he revenge. Nigerians could remember the roles that the ex Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele played ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Naira notes were redesigned, and they became extremely scarce to the extent that Nigerians protested and torched a number of banks across the country. President Muhammadu Buhari actually gave his approval to the decision to redesign and limit the naira notes in circulation.

Bola Tinubu thought that the move of the apex bank was aimed at stopping him from actualizing his “life ambition” to lead the country. He struggled to win amidst cash crunch.

Upon his victory and swearing in, the president through the EFCC and DSS started dealing with Godwin Emefiele, who of course, worked on the decision and plan of the former president, Buhari.

The DSS arrested the banker and charged him to court. He was accused of possessing firearms illegally and for sponsoring terrorism in the southeastern part of Nigeria. The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its militants Eastern Security Network are pulling the region out of wider Nigeria.

Emefiele has denied wrongdoings. Surprisingly, the prosecutor, that is the office of the attorney general, couldn’t prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. Little wonder different security agencies fought over possession of the erstwhile CBN governor.

Now the EFCC has dragged the former governor to court. The anti corruption agency said that Emefiele engaged in fraud to the tune of N1.6bn. The court said that he should be remanded in the Kuje Prison. This actually brings the memory of Sambo Dasuki. The pattern of his ordeal (not trial) has a striking semblance with that of Godwin Emefiele.

Does Bola Tinubu want to treat Godwin Emefiele the same way as Muhammadu Buhari treated Sambo Dasuki? Buhari looked away from the sins of Goodluck Jonathan, on whose table everything stopped that time, and nailed an appointee of the same Jonathan.

Tinubu too wouldn’t dare to arrest Buhari, who ordered and approved the plan to redesign and reduce naira notes in circulation just to stop buying and selling of votes during the 2023 general elections.
