Will Ganduje beat Kwankwaso through proxies at the Apex Court?

The Court of Appeal has affirmed that the incumbent Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf was not the duly and validly elected governor. The court agreed with the election petition tribunal which sacked Yusuf earlier.

The appellate court also agreed that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress Yusuf Gawuna scored the most valid votes in the March 11 gubernatorial election in the northwestern state. Gawuna enjoys the support of the current national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Umar Ganduje.

Both Gawuna and Yusuf are stooges of former governors Ganduje and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Political Party (NNPP) in the last general elections.

They have both fought tooth and nail in the past and they don’t seem to be ready to stop the political acrimony. They used to be allies until unstated ideologies separated them and make them political foes.

When Abba Yusuf, a “political son” of the maverick politician Rabiu Kwankwaso, took over on 29 May, 2023, he started targeting properties and legacies of the immediate past governor Umar Ganduje. Of course, the handwriting of Rabiu Kwankwaso was clear on the wall.

Now that the appellate court has given its verdict, attention would now be on the apex court, which has the final say in the gubernatorial election petitions. The Supreme Court will blow the final whistle and indicate whether the current APC chairman has beaten Kwankwaso forever.

There is tension in the state, most especially the commercial hub, Kano. The two top politicians have divided the people and it’s not yet clear if the ex governor would beat his political leader, Kwankwaso through the candidate of the APC, Gawuna.
