The sins that land Abdulrasheed Bawa into DSS custody

Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, the ex chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), has reportedly dropped his resignation letter. That enabled the President, Bola Tinubu to nominate Ola Olukayode as his replacement.

He wrote and submitted his resignation letter while in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS). He has spent at least three months behind the bar. What could be his sins?

Some sources in the DSS talked about it with Sahara Reporters. They said that the secret police department retrieved a whooping sum of N580m from Abdulrasheed Bawa. That’s a huge amount of money from a civil servant, who ought to pilot the fight against corruption in the country.

In June, 2023 President Bola Tinubu indefinitely suspended Abdulrasheed Bawa “to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office” following “weighty allegation of abuse of office leveled against him”.

“Over N580 million has been retrieved from the incarcerated former chairman of the anti-graft agency, EFCC,” one of the sources told SaharaReporters.

The recovery of that fund may not be the only sin of the ex EFCC boss. In fact, he might not remain behind the bars because of the money. The suspended EFCC boss has reportedly refused to corporate with the secret police in the investigation.

“They’ve taken Bawa from DSS headquarters to one of their private facilities to have total control over him after he refused to write statements requested from him,” a top security source had said.

“The detained EFCC chairman (Bawa) has refused to write statements; he told DSS they have no right to detain him without charges.

Mr. Bawa reportedly abused his office. He shielded some politicians while he was a mercenary to intimidate other politicians. Mr. Abdulaziz Yari, ex Zamfara State governor and contender for the seat of Senate President enjoyed protection of Bawa.

Mr. Godswill Akpabio, who beat Yari in the House leadership election, has spilled beans. He accused the EFCC of embarrassing him while Abdulrasheed Bawa was in power.

Unverified information said that the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami used the former EFCC boss to harass perceived political opponents.
