Since the dismissal of the ex Edo State governor, the structure of the APC has been under a caretaker committee led by Mr. Mai Mala Buni. He is an incumbent Yobe State governor. The system may change from being reserved for former executives to current lawmakers.
When the race opened fully, Mr. Tanko Al-Makura joined instantly. He has not ceased from drumming lots of supports for his ambition to control and guide the All Progressives Congress. He is the senator representing the lovely people of Nassarawa South Senatorial District in the upper chamber of National Assembly.
Al-Makura may not be an accidental chairman of the APC. Even he may become the consensus candidate before the party goes to the convention in which Adams Oshiomhole’s successor will be officially chosen. Strong indications show how the senator may be the favorite in the race.
Mr. Al-Makura was at the secretariat of the North-central People’s Forum to canvas for the support of the APC leaders in the region. He may secure it with ease. Apart from that, the Lagos State bloc of the APC can consider Al-Makura.
The top senator has a smooth and lovely relationship with Bola Ahmed Tinubu. That could even be a strong advantage for Tanko Al-Makura. Apart from a possible support from Tinubu’s camp, Governor Abdullahi Sule can’t leave his predecessor in the lurch.
The second senator, who only recently joined the race is Sani Musa from Niger State. He may be the underdog in the competition for the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress. In as much as he is experienced, he can get the job.
Those in other camps apart from Tinubu’s may opt for the Niger State senator. One disadvantage that Al-Makura may have is that since he is close to Tinubu, he may be denied the opportunity to occupy the seat. Opponents of Tinubu within the party may be skeptical about allowing another Tinubu’s ally.
The People’s Democratic Party recently elected a new chairman. Mr. Iyorchia Ayu is from north-central region. The APC may toe that path and pick its chairman from the zone as well. If this happens, one of the two senators (Sani Musa and Tanko Al-Makura) may emerge as the chairman of APC.
And as explained above, Mr. Tanko Al-Makura and Mr. Sani Musa are the top politicians (from north-central) to clamour for the job. And thet are both senators representing their respective senatorial districts. And at least one of them may be the next chairman of the All Progressives Congress.
