Earthquake strikes Morocco, kills 632 so far
Late Friday a powerful earthquake struck north Africa ‘s Morocco. The disaster has so far claimed 296 lives, destroyed several buildings and sent residents of some of the major cities running for dear lives.
According to Reuters quoting the interior ministry, the figure of the casualties was preliminary and that additional 153 are injured in the earthquake. Rescuers are facing a challenge of reaching the mountainous sides where most of the deaths occured.
A resident of one of the areas talked to Reuters. He said that most of “our neighbors are under the the rubbles and people are working hard to rescue them using available means in the village.”
The Morocco geophysical center revealed that the earthquake struck Ighil area of the High Atlas with a magnitude of 7.2. However, the US Geological Survey puts the magnitude at 6.8.
Death toll from Morocco earthquake has risen quicker from 296 that it was in the late yesterday’s evening to 632.
The Online Parrot News had earlier reported that the mountainous sides of Morocco was hit by a earthquake of magnitude 7.2 even though the US Geological Survey puts the magnitude of the quake at 6.8.
Rescuers are struggling to reach the mountainous villages that are hard hit by the quake.
