Election Tribunal: What Obi told court ahead of verdict

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) sits tomorrow to give its verdict on the matter that Peter Obi of the Labour Party. The candidate, who came third in the election, has asked the court to upturn the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The electoral commission declared Bola Tinubu, who flew the flag of the All Progressives Congress in the election. But the ex Anambra State governor, who came third in the election has told the court to declare him as the winner.

His counsel presented some arguments before the court. The presidential candidate argued that Bola Tinubu was not qualified to contest for the elections because of the order of forfeiture.

An Illinois court had ordered that Bola Tinubu forfeit his property in a case involving drugs. The incumbent president lost his properties to the American state of Illinois. Based on this, Peter Obi said that Tinubu lost the election.

Peter Obi also argued that the vice president, Kassim Shettima, who ran on the same ticket with Tinubu, shouldn’t have contested for the race on the ground that he had double nominations. The Labour Party candidate said that Shettima got nomination for the senatorial seat from Borno State.

The aggrieved presidential candidate also presents an argument that the duo of Tinubu and Shettima failed to get 25% of the votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Labour Party candidate misinterpreted a section of the constitution and the electoral act.

Lastly, Obi, who looks forward to becoming the president, said that the Independent National Electoral Commission failed to upload the results of the election to the IREV (a portal created by the commission for the uploading of the election).
