Tribunal: military, police warn potential protesters ahead of verdict
The Court of Appeal has said that it would deliver the verdict tomorrow. The court has listened to all parties in the suits brought by the Labour Party (and its candidate Peter Obi), the People’s Democratic Party (and Alhaji Abubakar) and the Allied Peoples Movement.
The parties and their candidates have asked the court to upturn the victory of Bola Tinubu (the All Progressives Congress) in the 2023 general elections. The Chief Registrar Umar M. Bangari released a statement yesterday to give notice of the verdict.
The director of the Defence Information, Tukur Gusau, a brigadier general, has warned those who planned to cause violence tomorrow, Wednesday. Supporters of Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar have mounted pressure on the members of the tribunal.
The defense said that it had made preparations to forestall any form of violence across the country. The brigadier general said that the defence would ensure security of lives and properties and avoid a breakdown of law and order.
He however agreed that the defense would allow protests arising from the presidential election petition tribunal. He told the newsmen, “We have Ben maintaining peace and security in collaboration with other security agencies across the country”.
“We will continue to do our own work, and if anybody wants to perpetrate any mayhem, we cannot fold our arms and be looking at them. We have to do our job.
‘’On the (judgment) day, we will maintain our normal vigilance in conjunction with other security agencies. We can’t be doing our work and see somebody trying to unleash mayhem and we keep quiet. So, why are we outside (on patrol)?”
According to the Punch Newspaper, the Osun State Police command has expressed its preparedness fo the verdict delivery. The same is applicable to other state commands across the country.
