Falana blames poverty for coup in Africa

A senior advocate and human rights activist Femi Falana, SAN, has attributed the waves of military coup in Africa to poverty. The lawyer talked at a time the continent is being swept by juntas.

Falana said that coups in Africa is caused by poverty. The continent is impoverished even though it’s highly rich in mineral resources, which can and ought to be its main source of wealth.

Gabon became the 7th country to witness a coup since 2020. The veteran leader, Ali Bongo was ousted by a group of military men.

The human rights activist talked at a Nigeria Labour Congress symposium in Abuja. Mr. Falana explained that the ruling class in Africa is taking the people for granted. He said that despite pervasive poverty, the National Assembly allocated billions of naira to itself.

In another development, the juntas in Gabon have slated Monday, 3 September for the swearing in ceremony of the military president, Brice Nguema.
