Tinubu’s Presidency: what’s happened after 30 days

Gradually, Bola Tinubu’s presidency or leadership of the country has clocked 30 days, or, simply put, a month. The then candidate of the All Progressives Congress promised Nigerians a “renewed hope”. He must have considered the level of bad governance that characterised Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership.

The incumbent president said he would hit the ground running and change the narratives of the people of the country, who have suffered more than enough in the past eight years. But at the dawn of Tinubu’s presidency, he announced without blinking his eyes that subsidy on petroleum would be removed.

The price of the premium motor spirit jumped from N195 to as high as N510. It costs more than that in some parts of the country. That rekindles the suffering of the people of the country. Cost of living soars, more struggling, and even viable businesses collapse. The decision to remove subsidy wa based on the argument that the political and elite class are cashing in on it. The interest of the masses, worse basic livelihood hinges on fuel, seemed not to be considered.

Tinubu’s presidency said it would bring up palliative to cushion the effects of the removal. After 30 days, there is no signal that the said palliative would come. Inflation is still rapidly increasing, hence making life extremely difficult for the millions of poor Nigerians.

That’s not the only thing to say about the current administration. As a matter of fact, the exchange rate has reached the record height. Naira has been devalued. Whereas Nigeria imports most of its goods including petroleum. A rise in the exchange rate will definitely affect what the people buy.

The Bola Tinubu’s presidency has introduced or signed a bill to allow students to obtain loan. It didn’t take much time to detect what is behind the smokescreen. The loan, though obtainable in the advanced countries, is not to help the university students. There are more than meets the eyes.

Within a week after the Tinubu’s presidency introduced the policy, notable universities in the country astronomically increased the tuition fees to a record high. In fact, several others are planning towards increasing the fees by up to 400%.

It will be much easier for an elephant to pass through the needle’s eye than the students to obtain the loans due to the stringent requirements. The increment in the fees will be justified by the student loan policy.

What else has Tinubu’s presidency done? A day to the Eid-el-Kabir festival, a video went viral. It was a convoy of the president himself with vehicles numbering jaw-dropping 140. It’s amazing that a leader who calls for perseverance and resilience can be that extravagant. Nigerians raised their eyebrows, but that appeared to be the best they could. The presidency didn’t have any explanation. Perhaps, the convoy is normal even at the austerity measure.

Definitely, Bola Tinubu hit the ground with the suspension of Godwin Emefiele and Rasheed Bawa, the CBN governor and EFCC boss respectively. That’s no achievement. The Tinubu’s presidency may be on a vendetta considering the roles Emefiele played ahead of the 2023 general elections. Not until the duo face the law and finally cool their heels behind the bar, there is nothing to celebrate about their suspension or removal.

He has also fired the military heads. That’s not surprising as well. In fact, it’s widely expected that a new president will appoint those he really and wholly trusts. He dares not sleep while a snake is lurking in his roof. So, the removal and appointment of military heads is not something to put in the records.
