How APC collapses and dies in Osun State

The APC collapses and dies in Osun State with the return of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to power across all levels in the state. The return of the PDP didn’t happen all of a sudden. It came up as a result of several factors including the collapse and death of the APC.

Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, the outgoing interior minister worked assiduously to keep the APC on track and to look more formidable. He enjoyed the support of party members and led the party to several victories in 2014, 2015 and 2018 elections. But ahead of the 2018 gubernatorial election, crisis started and it cost the party its last grip on power.

The fight between Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola and Rauf Aregbesola was so serious that the APC almost lost the 2018 poll. Some would say that the Aregbesola’s successor actually lost the poll to Ademola Adeleke.

Nevertheless, the last-minute efforts made by the party leaders at State and national level made the APC win 2018 state election and 2019 general elections. The issues (or crises ) became more serious as acrimony brewed between Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, who lost reelection in 2022.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Ademola Adeleke as the governor of the state. The APC candidate, Oyetola went to court to seel redress and claimed his “stolen mandate” at the court.

But before the matter was finally settled at the Supreme Court, the PDP dealt a devastating blow to the APC in the general elections. The former won all the seats in the National Assembly (both the Senate and the House of Representatives).

But it was not the last straw that broke the camel’s back. The APC hoped to win the petition at the apex court and returned to power at least at the state level. That was the objective. But it failed to materialise as the court confirmed that Ademola Adeleke was duly elected.

The All Progressives Congress in Osun State looked highly viable at least while Mr. Rauf Aregbesola was the governor and leader of the party in the state. The bickering between him and his successor crushed the party totally.

The APC would now have to wait till at least 2026 to try to enter government again in Osun State.
