Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate in the last February presidential election, may still never become president. He covertly showed his desperation for power when he talked at an event in Anambra State some days ago.
The candidate, who rose from obscurity to a very serious contender, might have also doggedly conceded defeat to the winner and president-elect Bola Tinubu. He said he would still rule the country. Some permutations show otherwise.
Of course, there is no zoning of the presidency in this current political dispensation. All interested and qualified aspirants and candidates jostled for tickets of their parties and the seat itself. But it doesn’t mean that zoning is dead.
Barring all unforseen circumstances, Bola Tinubu would finish his first term of four years and he might win another one. Automatically, Mr. Peter Obi would need to wait for eight more years. That may not even be too long.
Once Bola Tinubu finishes his two possible terms of eight years (by projection), Mr. Peter Obi can have his chances. Yet the chances would be low considering the fact that the northern elite would call for return of power to their region.
It looks like there is an unwritten plan to rotate power between the north and the south. It’s not likely to have another southern politician taking over from Bola Tinubu. That’s what Mr. Peter Obi ought to have considered.
Apart from the obvious fact stated above, the Igbo people in the southeast geopolitical zone don’t seem to have a grasp of the politics of the country. They are convinced that there is a marginalisation somewhere and they have created this kind of acrimony for Yoruba and other tribes that don’t buy from their conspiracies.
If there is no reorientation and reintegration to the larger country, Mr. Peter Obi, and of course other Igbo politician won’t move closer to the presidency let alone to occupy the extremely coveted office of the president.
