People’s Democratic Party: Atiku’s role in crises

How Atiku destabilizes People’s Democratic Party

The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party is complicit in the failure and crisis of the political party. Mr. Atiku Abubakar is at the centre of the whole saga in the political party.

The ex vice president used his desperation to cause instability in the People’s Democratic Party and what’s happening right now is just the manifestation of what he has done. The current imbroglio didn’t just start.

It started in 2014 when Mr. Atiku Abubakar led some other politicians out of the People’s Democratic Party to spite the then president Goodluck Jonathan, who was seeking constitutional second term in the presidential villa.

Atiku Abubakar thought that the newly formed All Progressives Congress would be a readily available platform for him to use. He failed in his bid to secure the ticket of the new political party. But it’s too late that time to return to the People’s Democratic Party.

Jonathan lost the election. And things have never been the same for the so-called largest political party in Africa. The defection of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Bukola Saraki, Rotimi Amaechi, Kawu Baraje and a host of others cemented Jonathan’s loss in the poll.

Atiku Abubakar returned ahead of the 2019 general elections. He found his way to victory in the People’s Democratic Party primary election in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers State. His victory in the poll almost divided the party as a section preferred Aminu Tambuwal.

The party lost to the incumbent Muhammadu Buhari. That should have sent a signal to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar that he wouldn’t become the president of the country. He fought Jonathan on the ground that it should be the turn of the northern region.

Since he represented the PDP in the 2019 presidential election, he ought to have allowed someone else to pick up the ticket in 2023. That would have affirmed fairness in the party. However, due to his insatiable desire, Atiku Abubakar insisted that there would be no rotation or recognition of the convention.

There won’t be peace when there is no fairness in any gathering. That is what Atiku Abubakar has failed to realize as far as the issue of the People’s Democratic Party is concerned.

The fact that the presidential ticket of the party was not zoned to the southern region birthed the unresolved internal crises in the party at this moment. How can a region have both the national chairman and the presidential candidate?

Five aggrieved governors refused to work for Atiku. He could have nipped his predicted defeat in the bud by using all mechanisms to reach a truce with the governors. He thought the northern votes would be enough for him to win the poll. He has been proved wrong now.

The ex vice president owes the People’s Democratic Party lots of apologies for his actions and decisions. The presidential candidate of the party has really destabilized the political party beyond repair. He insisted that Iyorchia Ayu wouldn’t leave his post as national chairman.

The same chairman has been suspended in Benue State. What more could he do? Because of the ex vice president, crisis ensued in Oyo PDP just like in other chapters of the party.
