Why Taofeek Arapaja can’t become PDP’s national chairman

In term of ranking, Mr. Taofeek Arapaja is next in line to become the national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The ex deputy governor of Oyo State will face severer problems than his possible predecessor, Iyorchia Ayu.

Mr. Ayu has been suspended at his ward in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State. Some allegations were levelled against him including working against the party and failure to pay his dues as expected.

If the suspension holds, then, he will leave the stage in shame just as his own predecessor Mr. Uche Secondus did last year. But the next person in line, the southern vice chairman of the party can’t succeed the embattled Iyorchia Ayu.

Mr. Taofeek Arapaja broke from the ranks of Ayu shortly after the primary election of the party and issues started to come up in the main opposition party, the PDP. The ex deputy governor belongs to the aggrieved governors of the PDP.

He himself is guilty of anti party activities that pulled down Ayu. Under his watch, the PDP lost the three senatorial districts in Oyo State and eight of the House of Representatives seats. Taofeek Arapaja didn’t work for the success of Atiku Abubakar and the PDP in the general elections.

As a matter of fact, Mr. Arapaja is also guilty of corruption which is among the allegations against Ayu. After the primary election, the ex deputy governor claimed that several millions of naira were paid into his account. And he wrote his boss to return the fund.

It’s amazing to hear Arapaja claim ignorance of the fund in his account. Of course, he had been hobnobbing with the national chairman before things went wrong between the two of them.

If all these are not enough to stop Arapaja from becoming the PDP’s chairman, one more thing should definitely block the bid. The northern region still has right to produce the national chairman of the party.

Mr. Uche Secondus almost completed his tenure at the Wadata Plaza Secretariat of the party. He could have even done second term but for the opposition of ambitious Nyesom Wike and his colleagues from southern region.

As a matter of fact, the north has not completed its tenure in charge of the affairs of the party. Hence, Mr. Taofeek Arapaja can’t become PDP’s national chairman.
