Benue PDP suspends national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu

The crisis engulfing Benue PDP has resumed fully after the general elections. The state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party has been in mire since the election of Mr. Iyorchia Ayu as the national chairman of the party.

Mr. Ayu didn’t enjoy the support of the state governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, and that was the genesis of the protracted issue in the state chapter of the political party.

The national chairman didn’t back the zoning of the ticket of the party to the southern region. Whereas Mr. Samuel Ortom considered it germane to shift ground for the southern politicians in the party. That fuelled the Benue PDP crisis because they were not on the same page.

The crisis contributed to the horrible performance of the party in the election. Benue PDP has lost the governorship seat to the APC candidate, Father Hyacinth Alia, who beat Titus Zam of the PDP.

To worsen the situation, Mr. Samuel Ortom himself lost his bid to represent the people of Benue North West Senatorial district. He was defeated as well in the general elections.

Mr. Iyorchia Ayu, now suspended from the party, gave his full support to the ex vice president Atiku Abubakar. The state governor, Ortom preferred Mr. Peter Obi. The bitterness in the Benue PDP might have contributed to the victory Obi recorded in the state.

The state chapter of the PDP argued that Mr. Iyorchia Ayu engaged in anti party activities. Hence, his suspension became imperative. Ayu didn’t have a hand in the selection or election of Mr. Titus Zam, who lost with a wide margin to the Catholic priest.

The suspension took place at his Igyorov council ward in Benue State.
